Pressure systems safety
The regulatory requirements for the safe design, installation, operation and maintenance of systems that contain or generate pressurised fluids or gases. Each jurisdiction sets requirements for written examination schemes, operating limits and competent inspection.
By jurisdiction
UK HSE
“pressure systems safety”Exact equivalentThe Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (SI 2000/128) require that pressure systems are designed, installed, modified and repaired safely; that a written scheme of examination exists for systems above specified threshold sizes; that periodic examinations are carried out by a competent person; and that pressure systems are operated within safe operating limits.
Irish HSA
“pressure equipment safety”Close equivalentThe Pressure Equipment Safety Regulations 2014 (SI 2014/38), implementing EU Directive 2014/68/EU, govern pressure equipment in Ireland. In-service inspection requirements arise from the General Application Regulations 2007 and industry-specific codes. There is no Irish equivalent of the PSSR written scheme of examination by name.
US OSHA
“boiler and pressure vessel safety”Partial equivalentOSHA 29 CFR 1910.169 covers compressed air receivers. Boilers and pressure vessels are regulated primarily by state laws and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code rather than federal OSHA. OSHA references the ASME Code in 1910.217 and related standards.
Practitioner note: The written scheme of examination defines both scope and frequency. Operating outside the scheme, or past an examination date, is a clear breach.
